iMac Touch? iPhone Firmware 2.1

Don’t want to pay a fortune to Rogers for data charges on your iPhone? Rogers offers an unlimited-data package for $7.00 a month- but it is only form non-smart phones. This means you can’t use it on your blackberry, windows mobile phones, and you would assume-your iPhone. The plan is essentially designed for devices that do not have a qwerty keyboard, or for devices that have a tiny screen. Rogers can afford to offer this because people using “dumb” phones won’t be able to get much use out of the unlimited data.

Here is where it gets interesting… at this time, there is no way for rogers to enforce, or rather prevent, the use of the unlimited data plan with an iPhone. The same thing goes for Palm SmartPhones running on palm software.

If you were to call in to Rogers and ask about this, they will tell you you cannot use the $7.00/month plan and that if you try it they cannot guarentee it will work. I know several people who are successfully using the $7.00 month plan right now, wiht no problems at all. If you try it out, post some feedback about how it is working out for you.

Ummm… it’s called IMEI tracking. They CAN tell which phone you use by the serial number of the phone. It registers on the network and tells Rogers exactly what phone, software, brand, etc…. of the handset. With this, they can disallow the usage and charge you pay per use charges! (yikes!!).

The $7 data plan will not work on any smartphone as it is not a data plan. It is an “Unlimited Mobile Browser Plan” This is meant for use on non-smart phones using the Rogers Embedded Browser only on WAP sites. iPhones, Blackberries and the like use HTML. If you think you are getting away with unlimited data, wait till your bill comes. You will be paying 5 cents per kb which adds up very quickly.
