Some of you guys may know that Rogers offers three domestic text messaging plans, with the largest plan being 2500 SENT messages per month. This costs $10 per month. Receiving text messages is free, as with most wireless carriers. 2500 messages should be more than enough for the average person… but not for me. With $100 in text message overage fees on my blackberry last month I called Rogers to sort things out. The first line of defense you speak with is completely useless. They say sorry sir there is nothing we can do. This is when you tell them “I would like to cancel my plan”. That is the keyword for them to forward you to the cancellation department (or “customer retention department”). Once in the cancellation department you are speaking with someone who has a little bit more power, but they can sometimes be equally useless. Being nice helps. Don’t yell and rant, just be polite and they will do their best. BUT when their best isn’t good enough, let them have it. The cancellation department representative told me there was nothing she could do about my overage charges, and that there was no larger text messaging plan available. Bullshit. I said why don’t you just give me two of the 2500/month packages? “Our system doesn’t allow that sir.” This is when you ask to speak with a supervisor.

I politely asked to speak with a supervisor and was told that this would not be possible because this problem did not require a supervisor. That’s when I started yelling. After being on hold for about 5 minutes I was finally talking to a manager. I told him my problem and he politely said “Let me see what I can do for you…”. I waited patiently while he did something on his computer. He came back with this offer:

•Credit me back HALF of the text message overage fees ($50)

•Put me on a new unlimited text plan

•Still charge the same rate as before

Wow, so now I have an unlimited text messaging plan that apparently doesn’t exist, I get $50 back, and my monthly bill doesn’t go up. Sweet!

Actually you don’t even need to go through that much to get unlimited text messages. That unlimited text message feature has been there for long time. You just have to talk to someone who actually works there for awhile instead of newbies because it is one of the features that you cannot find in the job book. Retention department used to have no newbie…..oh well…I guess that’s change.

[…] expensive if you ask me. Rogers wireless offers unlimited for $15 if you call in and yell at them (see my story on this here). You would think prices would be much cheaper in the […]

Just pick up the phone and call them. Texting is so impersonal. Can’t we talk to each other like humans anymore. Texting is a waste of money also.

  4. Graham Says:

Well Texting is the new way dinosaur, its supposed to be impersonal. Instead of bothering someone while they’re at work or in the middle of something you send them a message they can answer at their liesure instead of harassing them and forcing them to speak to you now. That and with most companies its cheaper than long distance.

which manager did you talk too because my son just ran up an additional 162.00 over the unlimited plan and no one at rogers seemed to want to help me today when I called. I have four phones on my plan and the monthly bills are getting up over 500 help

Hey Jeff- You have to be firm and persistent. I am very surprised considering you have 4 phones with them that they are giving you trouble. Make it clear that you are going to leave rogers and go to telus because rogers cannot offer you an unlimited text messaging plan. Let me know how it works out-

  7. Terri Says:

is it true they send you a transaction for every sent and recieved text message?
i’m with rogers and i definitely don’t want that shit.

  8. Cathy Says:

In March I switched my Rogers plan to the 2500 Text Messages for an extra $10 per month and so did my boyfriend, in an effort to cut down on our cell costs. Since that moment, we each only get about half of the messages. We have both spoken to Rogers at various times since last March and told varying things. Turn off the units, pull out the battery, return the battery, repower the unit and it should work. No it did not. Secondly, purge/clean the units of pictures and old text messages, that didn’t work. Thirdly, the plan of 2500 text messages per month had a bug and even the Rogers person had problems. We moved and even both changed phone numbers but are barely getting 50% of the messages. Today I was told by a 2nd level support person at Rogers that we were texting each other 25-50 times per day which was too much for their network to support. Some of the messages are getting dropped because of that and there is nothing they can do to fix it. We get text messages from other people and can send to others with no problem. I asked if I could be send a copy of the “Technical Bulletin” stating this problem but was told one didn’t exist. I mentioned I would switch to Bell if they couldn’t do more and got no response from that. In the end, when I wouldn’t let it go they opened a case # and gave me a direct line to their technical support. I am to ask for a Manager to sort this out. I will be checking out Bell, Telus and Virgin asap and switching but wonder first if anyone else is having this problem.

Hey Jeff my daughter ran up here phone bills with just texting $380 one month and $430 the next month and I called customer relations you have to demand to talk to them and told them that this was unacceptable and they offered me the unlimited texting for $10 and withdrew the $430 bill.

David, my child, you are freaking hopelessly autistic with technology, I hath wrought unlimited texting to giveth infinitesmal fun and entertainment in the classroom, why do you revoke my infinite wisdom and awsomeness? Embrace text messages so that I may one day look upon your carpal tunnel with love and hand lotion.

    Im torn.
Im deciding on buying a new phone.
The Iphone or the Blackberry Storm.
The crappy thing, is they have different providers.
I have looked at specs for both phones and they are very similar.
I like how the Storm can flip to the side and txt, but I like how the Iphone has such a huge apps store.
The one reason I can’t decide between the two is because Telus has unlimited texting, like unlimited and Rogers/Fido has “unlimited” 2500, sometimes thats not enough for me.
The Iphone is cheaper as well, any suggestions?

  12. Stephanie Says:

I got a large bill with rogers texting as well, I went a little too overboard and my bill came to almost $200! I really want unlimited texting with my Blackberry Pearl, but it’s kinda hard to since the phone alone costs $50 a month even if it isn’t on.
