new ipod shuffle

Apple has done it again with the new iPod shuffle. It comes in two different colours, silver or charcoal/black. The iPod itself is even smaller than the previous shuffle but now features no buttons at all. The device itself is controlled button located on the proprietary headphones provided by Apple. At this point it looks like it is available in a 4GB model only, which means it will hold about 1000 songs.

Apple claims the battery in the new iPod shuffle should last about 10 hours when fully charged, but iPhoneNews.ca has not yet tested the device. The device itself weighs only 10.7 grams (0.38 ounces).

The coolest feature that the iPod offers is something called VoiceOver. Basically, by pressing a button the iPod will speak and tell you what song is playing. It can also tell you the name of your playlists. This feature is kind of useless in my opinion, as shuffle users usually know what songs they have on their iPod. Check back for a detailed review once our shuffle arrives.

Cydia came into the picture last weekend after opening up an app store for unauthorized iPhone and iPod Touch applications on Friday. Although the company has long been involved with the distribution of unauthorized applications, Jay Freeman (creator of Cydia) recently announced his intention to not only monetize the app store but also to give developers an equal (or increased) revenue split compared to Apple’s offerings.

At this time, Cydia’s website payment methods are set by the developer and the majority of applications on Cydia are available for free. It should be noted that if Freeman intends to pay developers more than Apple’s 30 percent commission, things could change. Cydia offers applications unavailable through the Apple App Store (which had 15,000 apps available in January) and will likely work closely with Rock Your Phone — a small company that is offering a way for non-jailbroken iPhones to still run unauthorized applications.

There is a third company that is reportedly creating adult game applications and other adult content (which will be eagerly received, according to user comments). Other comments express concern not only over payment methods and the security of credit card information on Cydia, but also over the security of the applications they install, potential iPhone Trojans emerging from adult content apps, and concerns that Apple will now crack down on jailbreaking of iPhones once and for all.

BlackBerry App World will provide blackberry users a place to download and share applications in much the same way the Apple App Store has worked for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

RIM will also be launching the blackberry developers site to help stimulate creativity in the blackberry app community. Microsoft will also be working on a Windows Marketplace for Mobile apps for windows mobile 6.5.
